Burn Surgeries

Burn Surgeries

Burn surgeries are medical procedures that are performed on individuals who have suffered burn injuries. These surgeries may be necessary to repair or reconstruct damaged skin, restore function to affected areas of the body, or address complications that arise from the burn injury.

The specific type of burn surgery performed will depend on the severity and location of the burn injury, as well as the goals of the treatment. Some common types of burn surgeries include:

Surgery for acute burn care

Burn dressings
Burn dressings are a type of medical dressing that is designed to be used on burns. They are used to cover and protect the affected area, reduce pain, and promote healing. Burn dressings can come in many forms, including gels, creams, foams, and dressings.
The type of burn dressing used will depend on the severity of the burn and the location on the body. For example, hydrogel dressings may be used for superficial burns, while silver dressings may be used for deeper burns or those at risk of infection.
Skin grafts:
This involves taking healthy skin from one part of the body and transplanting it to the burned area. Skin grafts may be used to cover large or deep burns, or to help prevent infection.
Use of collagen in acute burns
Collagen is a protein that is naturally found in the skin and plays an important role in wound healing. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of collagen-based dressings and topical agents for the treatment of acute burns. Collagen dressings can be used to cover and protect the burn wound, promote healing, and reduce pain and inflammation.
Cadaveric skin allograft in burns
Cadaveric skin allograft, also known as skin transplantation, is a medical procedure in which skin tissue from a deceased donor is used to treat severe burns. This type of skin graft is used when a patient’s own skin is not available or suitable for grafting. The donated skin is carefully screened and processed to reduce the risk of infection and rejection. The allograft is then transplanted onto the patient’s burn wound to cover and protect the damaged skin. Cadaveric skin allograft can be a life-saving treatment for patients with extensive burn injuries, as it can help to reduce pain, prevent infection, and promote healing. It can also be used as a temporary measure while a patient’s own skin is healing or being prepared for grafting.

Surgery for Post burn care

  1. Scar revision: Scar tissue can form after a burn injury, which can cause tightness, itching, and limited mobility. Scar revision surgery can help improve the appearance and function of scar tissue.
  2. Contracture release: Burn injuries can cause the skin to contract, which can restrict movement and cause deformities. Contracture release surgery involves cutting and removing the scar tissue to restore range of motion.
  3. Flap surgery: Flap surgery involves moving a piece of healthy skin, fat, and muscle from one part of the body to the burned area. This procedure can help repair extensive tissue damage, release contractures and improve the function of the affected area.
  4. Tissue expansion is a surgical technique that is commonly used to treat burn scars. The goal of tissue expansion is to stretch the skin near the burn scar so that it can be used to replace the scar tissue.
During tissue expansion surgery, a balloon-like device called an expander is placed under the skin near the scar. Over time, the expander is gradually filled with saline solution, which causes the skin to stretch and grow. This process can take several weeks to several months, depending on the amount of expansion needed.
Once the skin has been adequately expanded, the expander is removed and the stretched skin is used to replace the scar tissue. This can help improve the appearance of the scar and restore function to the affected area.
Tissue expansion is often used in cases where a large amount of skin needs to be replaced, such as in severe burn injuries. It can also be used to treat scars that are located in areas where there is limited skin available for grafting, such as the face, hands, and feet.
